TEMPE, AZ — Arizona State University faced a significant setback on Friday as starting quarterback Sam Leavitt was confirmed to be out for the remainder of the season. Head coach Kenny Dillingham announced during an appearance on the Bickley and Marotta Show that Leavitt will undergo season-ending surgery to address a “lingering issue.” The specifics of his injury have not been disclosed.
Leavitt suffered the injury after a tough hit during the first quarter of the Sun Devils’ 24-16 defeat to the Cougars last Saturday. Although he managed to return to the field, he was seen limping off in the fourth quarter. He had been in a walking boot during Arizona State’s practice on Tuesday. This season, Leavitt has thrown for over 1,600 yards and accumulated 10 touchdowns, showcasing his potential on the field.
Earlier in the season, Leavitt sustained a foot injury against Baylor on September 20 and missed a game against No. 24 Utah two weeks later. He made a strong comeback, leading the Sun Devils to an impressive win over No. 7 Texas Tech on October 18, but his latest injury has thwarted any further contributions this season.
Arizona State’s roster has been plagued with injuries, including star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Texas Tech game.
The Sun Devils will look to regroup as they prepare to travel to Iowa State on Saturday for a rematch in the Big 12 title game, set to kick off at 10 a.m. Despite the challenges, the team remains optimistic about their remaining games and the potential for other players to step up in Leavitt’s absence.
