A man convicted of the brutal murders of a Valley family has been executed in Arizona. Richard Djerf, 55, was put to death by lethal injection early Friday morning at a state prison facility in Florence, with officials pronouncing him dead at 10:40 a.m.

Briana Whitney, Arizona’s Family True Crime Correspondent, was among the media representatives who witnessed the execution. She reported that Djerf, who was restrained during the procedure, appeared calm and did not make eye contact with those present. Some difficulties were noted with the insertion of the IV, requiring multiple attempts, but ultimately, the process went without major incident. Djerf did not express any last words before receiving the lethal drugs and, after a brief period, seemed to drift into unconsciousness before his death.

His final meal consisted of a double cheeseburger, onion rings, cherry pie, and a 20-ounce Pepsi.

Djerf’s crimes date back to September 14, 1993, when he entered the home of his former coworker, Albert Luna Jr., under the pretext of delivering flowers. In a shocking act of revenge for an alleged theft, Djerf held four of Luna’s family members hostage and proceeded to murder his mother, father, brother, and sister. The details of the crime were gruesome, involving physical violence and an attempt to conceal the act by setting fire to the house.

Convicted in 1995, Djerf was sentenced to death for the four counts of first-degree murder. The prosecutor who brought him to justice described the crime scene as the worst he had ever encountered, and the case revealed Djerf’s disturbing fascination with violent films and macabre decorations in his own home.

Recent messages from Djerf conveyed remorse for his actions. He expressed regret over the pain he caused and acknowledged that he had spun out of control, recognizing that Albert Luna was innocent of any wrongdoing related to the initial theft. Djerf emphasized his hope that his execution might bring some peace to the surviving members of the Luna family as he urged that the focus should shift to honoring their memory rather than his actions.

The execution of Djerf was the second in Arizona this year, highlighting the state’s ongoing use of capital punishment amidst a backdrop of past controversies. While Arizona faced criticism for issues surrounding lethal injections, the recent execution proceeded without major disruption, demonstrating a commitment to carrying out final justice for heinous crimes.

This event brings closure to the Luna family and serves as a reminder of the impact of violence on families and communities. The officials involved in Djerf’s case reaffirmed their dedication to seeking justice for victims, echoed by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, who emphasized the importance of honoring the memories of the Luna family members.
