A severe cold snap stemming from the Arctic has gripped the Korean Peninsula, resulting in freezing temperatures across the region. The chilliest conditions are expected to persist over the next few days, particularly in central areas, with morning temperatures plunging to around -10 degrees Celsius in many locations. The forecast predicts daytime highs ranging from -6 to 3 degrees Celsius.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the current cold wave is attributed to a cold continental high-pressure system that is driving temperatures down by more than 5 degrees compared to normal for this time of year. In Seoul, the morning temperature reached a record low of -13 degrees Celsius, with the wind chill making it feel like -16 degrees. A cold wave warning has been issued for the entire Gyeonggi Province. The situation is even more severe in Paju, where temperatures fell to -20.4 degrees Celsius, while other areas such as Yeoncheon and Pocheon recorded lows of -18.8 and -18.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In addition to the frigid temperatures, heavy snowfall is expected along the west coast and in island regions. A heavy snow warning is currently active for the southwestern coast of Honam and Jeju Island, with predictions of up to 30 centimeters of snow on Ulleungdo and Dokdo, and over 25 centimeters on the mountainous areas of Jeju.

Furthermore, strong winds primarily affecting the central and Honam coastal regions are contributing to a harsher wind chill. The Meteorological Administration anticipates that the cold wave will peak tomorrow, with Seoul expected to reach an astonishing -14 degrees Celsius in the morning. The freezing temperatures are projected to continue throughout the weekend.

Despite these challenging weather conditions, residents are being encouraged to prepare adequately for the cold and snowfall, suggesting that this period, while severe, can be managed with appropriate precautions.
