Arch Manning Shines in Hot Texas Debut, Ignites Championship Hopes

AUSTIN, Texas — Arch Manning had an impressive debut as the starting quarterback for Texas, throwing for 258 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, leading the Longhorns to a decisive 51-3 victory over UL Monroe. Manning stepped in for the injured Quinn Ewers, helping Texas maintain its perfect record at 4-0.

Although Manning faced challenges early, including an interception on his first possession, he quickly found his rhythm. The Longhorns scored touchdowns on six out of his ten drives, amassing a 44-3 lead before he exited the game early in the fourth quarter. The redshirt freshman completed 15 of 29 passes.

Reflecting on his performance, Manning acknowledged that he wished he could have had a few throws back, particularly his initial interception, which ULM defensive back Carl Fauntroy intercepted under pressure.

When asked to evaluate his game, Manning rated himself a “C-plus,” while emphasizing that securing the win was the most important factor.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was realistic about the expectations for Manning’s first start, stating he anticipated some learning experiences but was confident in his preparation and effort.

The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2008, received significant contributions from the team. Running back Jaydon Blue rushed for 124 yards and scored four total touchdowns, while the Texas defense stifled the Warhawks, allowing just 111 total yards on 2.2 yards per play.

Sarkisian had outlined an aggressive game plan for Manning against ULM’s defense, leading to success with eight passes completing 15 or more yards. Manning notably connected on a 56-yard pass to Isaiah Bond and a 46-yarder to Matthew Golden, distributing the ball to 11 receivers throughout the game.

Manning stated, “Having so many playmakers around you definitely raises my comfort level.” He expressed satisfaction with getting various receivers involved in the offense.

Ewers, who sustained an oblique strain in last week’s blowout win against UTSA, is currently day-to-day, with hopes of returning for Texas’ SEC opener against Mississippi State. Manning, in Ewers’ absence, had also earned honors as SEC Freshman of the Week after showcasing a total of 276 yards and five touchdowns against UTSA.

After facing Mississippi State, Texas will enjoy a week off before a challenging stretch that includes games against No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 2 Georgia in consecutive weeks.

With national championship aspirations, Texas has exceeded expectations in the early part of the season, outscoring opponents by an impressive 190-22 margin. Following a significant road win against then-No. 10 Michigan, Sarkisian remains confident in his team’s talent, depth, and experience as they prepare for the challenges of the SEC.

Sarkisian emphasized that while he is pleased with the team’s current performance, there is still much work to be done and many crucial games ahead.
