Arabian Sea Meth Bust: Pakistani Navy and CMF Nab Nearly $1B in Narcotics

The Pakistani navy, as part of the Saudi-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), has successfully intercepted two vessels in the Arabian Sea, leading to the seizure of narcotics valued at nearly $1 billion. The CMF, which oversees naval operations in the area, reported on a recent operation that took place over 48 hours, where the Pakistani navy boarded the dhows and uncovered over 2.35 tonnes of narcotics.

On October 18, the crew intercepted the first dhow, seizing more than 2 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, known as “ICE,” with an estimated street value of approximately $822 million. Less than two days later, a second operation led to the confiscation of 350 kilograms of ICE valued at around $140 million, along with an additional 50 kilograms of cocaine worth $10 million.

While the CMF did not disclose the vessels’ countries of origin, they noted that both vessels were identified as having no nationality. This successful operation was carried out in direct support of the Saudi-led Combined Task Force 150, demonstrating the significant impact of multinational collaboration in tackling the global narcotics trade. Commodore Fahad Aljoiad, the commander of the CMF task force, remarked that this operation is one of the most significant narcotics seizures recorded by the CMF, showcasing the effectiveness of international cooperation in combatting drug trafficking.

The interception underscores a broader global commitment to addressing drug trafficking, similar to recent major operations in other regions. For instance, agencies in Fiji conducted a successful operation resulting in the seizure of over 4.5 tonnes of methamphetamine earlier this year, illustrating the persistent threat of drug trafficking across various nations. Collaborative efforts in law enforcement have been pivotal in dismantling narcotics networks, contributing to safer communities worldwide.

These operations not only highlight current challenges posed by international drug smuggling but also embody hope through ongoing, shared commitments to enhance public safety and security across borders.
