Apple has unveiled its second-generation AirTag tracker, maintaining the iconic design of the original while introducing some notable enhancements that could make it more appealing to users. The cost remains the same as the initial release, with AirTags priced at $29 for a single tracker and $99 for a four-pack, although discounts are likely available at various retailers.

A key aspect of the new AirTag is its upgraded Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, which not only enhances the tracking capabilities but also allows for Precision Finding. This feature is particularly advantageous, as it guides users to the exact location of the AirTag through the Find My app on their iPhone. Compared to its predecessor, the second-generation model extends its detection range by 1.5 times, reducing the effort needed to hone in on the tag’s signal.

While both generations maintain a similar aesthetic, the new AirTag has slight weight differences, from 11 grams in the original to 11.8 grams in the latest model. Identifying the generation can be done by examining the text on the back; the second-gen version uses all capital letters and includes additional information such as “FIND MY,” “NFC,” and the “IP67” rating for water and dust resistance.

In terms of connectivity, the second-generation AirTag boasts an upgraded Bluetooth chip, which enhances both its network range and its ability to securely connect with nearby devices. This improvement ensures that the AirTag can effectively communicate its location through Apple’s Find My network, even if it’s out of reach of the user’s phone.

Another enhancement is the speaker system in the new AirTag, which produces a louder sound and uses a new chime design, purportedly making it easier to locate even in noisy environments.

Overall, the second-generation AirTag showcases Apple’s dedication to improving user experience while retaining the original’s essence. These enhanced features not only position the new AirTag as a functional upgrade but also highlight Apple’s ongoing commitment to refined technology in everyday products, promising a more efficient and user-friendly experience for those who rely on these tracking devices.
