Apple has introduced the next generation of its AirTag, the highly popular item tracking device, which is now equipped with enhanced connectivity features and improved findability capabilities. The updated AirTag boasts a longer Bluetooth range and a louder speaker, allowing users to easily locate their important belongings through Apple’s Find My app.
Since its debut in 2021, AirTag has provided users with remarkable success stories, including the recovery of lost luggage, keys, bicycles, and instruments. One notable account includes a musician who managed to locate their lost instrument in time for a performance thanks to an AirTag placed inside their instrument case. The new version retains its price point of $29 for a single AirTag and $99 for a four-pack, with free personalized engraving options available on the Apple website and app.
Powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip—similar to those found in the iPhone 17 and Apple Watch Ultra 3—the new AirTag features upgraded Precision Finding that allows users to locate lost items from 50 percent farther away than the previous model. With this upgrade, users can also tap into the Precision Finding feature using their Apple Watch Series 9 or later.
In terms of user experience, the new AirTag delivers a significantly improved sound, being 50 percent louder than its predecessor, which helps in easily locating items such as keys or wallets. Apple’s Find My network, which enables users to track not only their AirTags but also other Apple devices, remains an essential part of the tracking process. When out of range, users can still pinpoint their AirTag’s location through the crowdsourced network of Apple devices that report approximate locations back to the owner.
An exciting addition is the Share Item Location feature, which allows users to temporarily and securely share the AirTag’s location with trusted third parties, including more than 50 partnered airlines. This feature has led to a reported 26 percent reduction in baggage delays and a 90 percent decrease in lost luggage incidents.
The new AirTag emphasizes security and privacy, as it does not store any location data or history on the device itself. All communications with the Find My network are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the device owner can access the location data.
In line with Apple’s environmental initiatives, the latest AirTag incorporates significant sustainable features, using 85 percent recycled plastic and maintaining compatibility with existing AirTag accessories.
With the new AirTag available for order on apple.com and the Apple Store app, customers can expect availability in physical Apple Store locations soon. Its price and integration with the Apple ecosystem continue to make AirTag a valuable accessory for those looking to keep track of their possessions effectively.
Apple remains committed to innovation in technology, ensuring that users have powerful and efficient tools to navigate their daily lives while promoting environmental sustainability and privacy.
