In an exclusive interview, Molly Anderson, Apple’s Vice President of Industrial Design, highlighted the design philosophy behind the new MacBook Neo, the company’s most affordable laptop yet. Unveiled earlier this week, the MacBook Neo has been crafted without compromising on quality, ensuring it remains distinctly Apple.

“It’s undeniably a MacBook,” Anderson stated, emphasizing that the design team did not make sacrifices in materials or craftsmanship, despite the lower price point. Set to retail at $599 in the U.S. and £599 in the U.K., the MacBook Neo aims to introduce new users to the Mac experience while ensuring a high standard of quality aligns with the MacBook family.

Anderson explained that the team focused on creating a laptop that would deliver a positive first impression for many users, making it essential to preserve the essence of what makes a Mac. She pointed out that the design process did not involve cutting corners or using inferior materials; instead, the laptop features high-quality aluminium, which is integral to its identity.

While maintaining the classic MacBook aesthetics, the MacBook Neo is designed to have its own personality. Anderson wanted it to feel welcoming and relatable, making it an approachable first laptop for many users. This sentiment is reflected in its rounded shape and vibrant color options, including dark blue, pale pink, and citrus yellow, pushing the boundaries of design for Apple laptops.

To balance affordability with quality, Anderson revealed that the manufacturing process for the Neo differs from that of the MacBook Air and Pro. By using a combination of processes, the design reduces manufacturing time and material usage, achieving a strong yet lightweight chassis. This innovative approach not only cuts costs but also enhances the laptop’s sustainability, with the MacBook Neo made from 60% recycled materials and featuring 90% reused aluminium.

As Apple pursues ambitious sustainability goals, Anderson stressed that environmental considerations remained paramount in the development of the MacBook Neo, ensuring that producing a lower-cost product did not lead to a compromise in its ecological footprint. This focus on sustainable design sets the MacBook Neo apart in an increasingly eco-conscious market.

Having a strong background in design, Anderson has been with Apple since 2014 and is committed to balancing innovative design with accessibility and sustainability. This new product introduction reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, stylish, and environmentally responsible products to consumers.
