Apple’s AirPods Revamp: Which One Should You Choose?

At Monday’s launch event, while the iPhone 16 and Apple’s AI initiatives garnered significant attention, the introduction of new AirPods also sparked considerable excitement.

For the first time in several years, Apple has revamped its standard AirPods and enhanced its AirPods Pro lineup. Unlike the iPhone, the two AirPods models have distinct numerical identifiers, which can create confusion, as consumers often associate higher numbers with more advanced technology.

If you’re looking to purchase a new pair of AirPods or considering them for a holiday gift, your choice may depend on the features you prioritize and your budget.

When it comes to features, the naming of AirPods 4 can be somewhat misleading, as there are two different products under this name. The base model offers a familiar design with a few updates, particularly in pricing.

The standout product is the AirPods 4 featuring Active Noise Control, representing a significant advancement for the standard line in years. This noise cancellation feature, previously exclusive to the Pro model, is accompanied by Adaptive Audio, Transparency Mode, and Conversation Awareness—features also found in the AirPods Pro 2.

However, the AirPods Pro 2’s unique selling point is their capability to serve as hearing aids. They are equipped with hearing tests and protection features, making them an appealing option for those who struggle to hear conversations but are hesitant to wear traditional hearing aids.

In terms of battery life, the base model AirPods 4 offer approximately five hours per charge, consistent with the AirPods 3. The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation provide four hours of use when this feature is activated. In contrast, the AirPods Pro 2 boast the longest battery life, estimated at six hours with noise cancellation enabled. All models come with a charging case capable of recharging the earbuds six times.

For those on a budget, the base model AirPods 4 are priced at $129, while the upgraded version with noise cancellation costs $179. The AirPods Pro 2 are priced at $249, but discounts are expected as the holiday season approaches. It is also worth noting that only the AirPods Pro 2 include a charging cable in the box, while the AirPods 4 require users to supply their own.
