Apple’s AirPods Pro Transforms into Affordable Hearing Aids

Apple has announced a significant update to its AirPods Pro, introducing them as clinical-grade over-the-counter hearing aids designed to assist individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. The wireless headphones are set to provide enhanced audio clarity through advanced sound processing capabilities.

Sumbul Ahmad Desai, Apple’s vice president of health, emphasized the impact of this new feature, stating it aims to assist over 1 billion people experiencing hearing challenges. The AirPods Pro will utilize machine learning to provide real-time sound adjustments, ensuring clearer audio throughout the day.

With traditional prescription hearing aids often priced in the thousands, Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 is priced at $249, making it a more affordable option for many. However, it’s important to note that these devices may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with severe hearing loss.

The announcement is timely, as recent FDA reforms have allowed the sale of over-the-counter hearing aids. Approximately 30 million adults in the U.S. experience some level of hearing loss, yet only 20% seek help, often due to the high costs associated with obtaining hearing aids.

To utilize the new functionality, AirPods Pro 2 users must complete a hearing test played through the device, which will then tailor the audio experience to their individual needs by enhancing specific frequencies.

Despite these advancements, the FDA still mandates a prescription for individuals under 18 years of age to acquire hearing aids, and these over-the-counter options do not address severe hearing loss. The FDA also suggests that those with significant hearing impairment consult with a healthcare professional.

Apple anticipates receiving FDA approval shortly, which would classify the AirPods Pro 2 as a regulated medical device. The hearing assistance feature will be available through a software update across over 100 countries this fall, including the U.S., Germany, and Japan.

Apple has a history of integrating health features into its products, such as the Apple Watch, which can detect irregular heart rhythms and alert users to conditions like sleep apnea.

Barbara Kelley, executive director of the Hearing Loss Association of America, expressed optimism about Apple’s contribution to hearing health awareness following the FDA’s move to expand the market for hearing devices. Many hope this innovation will encourage more people to address their hearing issues, especially given the societal stigma associated with hearing loss, particularly among older adults.

While many hearing aid users celebrated the announcement, some highlighted a notable disadvantage: traditional hearing aids typically offer longer battery life compared to the AirPods’ estimated 3-6 hours.
