A class action lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company secretly activated its Siri virtual assistant to eavesdrop on private conversations, has reached a tentative settlement of $95 million. Those who owned or bought a Siri-enabled device like an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and experienced unintended Siri activation during private conversations between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, could be eligible to file a claim.
Individuals wishing to participate in the settlement must file their claims by July 2. The potential payout is up to $20 per eligible Siri device, with the final amount depending on the number of valid claims filed. A notification may have been sent to some consumers via email or mail, which includes a Claim Identification Code necessary to process claims.
In addition to this settlement, it’s worth noting that Apple has implemented new security measures in their iOS update, which aims to protect users’ Keychain passwords and data from unauthorized access.
While Apple has agreed to this settlement, it continues to deny any wrongdoing related to the allegations. A U.S. district judge is expected to conduct a final approval hearing for the settlement on August 1, which will determine its fate.
This settlement presents an opportunity for affected consumers to receive compensation while highlighting Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance user privacy and security.
