This year, Apple introduced a significant enhancement for iPhone users by allowing them to add a Digital ID to their Apple Wallet using their U.S. passport. Launched on Wednesday, this feature enables users to pass through TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports across the United States, facilitating identity verification without the need for physical identification.
Previously, users could add their driver’s licenses or state IDs to Apple Wallet, but the adoption of this feature varied by state. The new Digital ID option addresses this gap by permitting individuals who do not possess a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state identification card to utilize their passports, effectively bypassing the inconsistencies in state support.
It’s important to note that while these digital passports streamline domestic travel, they do not replace the physical passport. The primary use is limited to identity verification in the airport setting.
To add your passport to Apple Wallet, follow these steps:
1. Open the Apple Wallet app.
2. Tap the “+” icon located at the top of your screen.
3. Select “Driver’s License or ID Cards.”
4. Tap “Digital ID.”
5. Follow the setup and verification instructions, which will include taking a photo of the passport page with your photo, scanning the chip embedded in the passport for authenticity, and capturing a live selfie while making specific facial movements for extra verification.
This feature is currently exclusive to the U.S. and requires devices running iOS 26.1 or later.
Although the application of the digital ID is currently limited to select airports, Apple has plans to expand its utility. Future updates will allow users to present their Digital ID for verification at various businesses and venues, providing a seamless way to prove identity or age at bars and entertainment venues. This anticipated expansion promises to make digital identification more broadly integrated into everyday activities, enhancing convenience and security for users.
