Apple has released iOS 18.1, introducing a new artificial intelligence feature known as Apple Intelligence for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro. The update also extends to iPad and Mac users. This launch marks a significant step for Apple, as the company aims to enhance its marketing for the recently unveiled iPhone 16 lineup and respond to inquiries regarding its AI strategy. Unlike other tech giants that focus on cloud-based AI using extensive Nvidia chip resources, Apple is adopting a more device-centric approach. The initial rollout of Apple Intelligence includes tools designed for text proofreading, object removal in photos, and the ability to condense multiple notifications into a single message.
Updates to Siri were also part of Monday’s release, featuring a redesigned interface that illuminates the edges of the phone’s screen. Siri is now capable of answering questions related to Apple products and offers more natural voice options. However, as of this update, Siri still cannot perform actions within apps, a feature expected to be added in a forthcoming update next year. Additionally, plans are in place for another update later this year, which will integrate ChatGPT and introduce image-generation capabilities in iOS 18.2. Some investors are optimistic that Apple Intelligence will stimulate significant upgrading among users and solidify Apple’s position in the AI landscape. Bank of America Securities analyst Wamsi Mohan indicated on October 25 that the staggered launch of Apple Intelligence could increase demand for iPhones following its initial release later this month.
To utilize Apple Intelligence, users must have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model. The service primarily functions using the processing power of the device, explaining its incompatibility with older phone models, although some complex requests will be handled by Apple’s servers. Users need to enable access to Apple Intelligence through the Settings app, placing them on a waitlist. While Apple has not disclosed the duration of the wait, feedback from beta testers over the summer suggests that most users received access within the same day. Once granted access, users will need to download substantial AI model files necessary for Apple Intelligence to function effectively.
