Apple M5 Debuts: AI-Driven Power for MacBook Pro and iPad Pro

Apple has unveiled its new M5 processor, which promises significant advancements in AI performance for the latest versions of the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. Priced at $1,599 and $999 respectively, these devices incorporate the latest chip, showcasing Apple’s commitment to enhancing computing power.

The M5 processor features an upgraded CPU and a 10-core GPU, with each core equipped with neural accelerators. This architecture enables the M5 to deliver a staggering four times the GPU compute performance compared to its predecessor, the M4, and six times that of the M1. In terms of graphics performance, the M5 is reported to be 35% faster than the M4 and 2.5 times faster than the M1, while its CPU performance improves multithreading capabilities by 15% over the M4.

The MacBook Pro lineup, particularly the new 13-inch model, marks the first use of the M5 chip in laptops. The 14-inch version also comes with up to 32GB of high-bandwidth memory and enhanced storage options, which contribute to an overall speedier experience compared to earlier models. Apple claims that the 14-inch MacBook Pro can now last up to 24 hours on a single battery charge, offering users significant usability improvements.

In the iPad Pro segment, available in both 11-inch and 13-inch variants, up to 16GB of faster memory and 1TB of storage capacity are on offer. However, the base model maintains a more modest configuration of 12GB memory and 256GB storage. The new iPads are outfitted with Apple’s custom C1X cellular model and the N1 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, although visually, they remain similar to previous generations.

Apple is strategically positioning these products as essential tools for developers and average users engaged in AI-driven tasks. The push toward promoting the capabilities of their hardware resonates with broader trends in the industry, as competitors like Microsoft also emphasize AI functions in their devices.

In financial terms, Apple’s Mac segment generated nearly $30 billion in revenue in 2024, while the iPad pivoted just under $27 billion. Even though the MacBook and iPad categories are smaller compared to the iPhone and services, they hold significant appeal among creative professionals who utilize these devices for video and photo editing.

With these advancements and a clear focus on tapping into the growing AI market, Apple is not only aiming to attract new customers but also encouraging current users, particularly those with older Intel-powered MacBooks, to make the upgrade.
