A delegation from the Australia Pacific Islands Business Council (APIBC), spearheaded by President Simon Gorman, is all set to launch an important business mission in the Northern Pacific, commencing on March 4. This initiative entails the formal signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in crucial locations: Nauru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Guam.

The MoU with Nauru, which follows an earlier virtual signing conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place in person on March 4. Agreements in the Marshall Islands and Guam are scheduled for March 6 and March 9, respectively. The primary objective of these MoUs is to bolster private sector connections, foster inclusive economic growth, and create job opportunities through enhanced business cooperation.

These agreements will lay the groundwork for collaboration between the APIBC and local business chambers, as well as industry bodies. They will focus on vital areas such as trade promotion, investment facilitation, business networking, and capacity development, all aimed at strengthening ties between Australian enterprises and businesses in the Northern Pacific, as well as facilitating sector-specific cooperation and collaborative initiatives.

President Simon Gorman emphasized the significance of this mission, noting, “From signing MOUs with the Marshall Islands and Guam Chambers of Commerce and following up on relationships arising out of the APIBC infrastructure forum with delegations in Nauru and Palau, we have a jam-packed itinerary ahead of us.”

Guam’s recent recognition as an Associate Member of the Pacific Islands Forum adds a layer of importance to this mission, marking the first formal interaction between the APIBC and industry bodies representing a PIF member in the territory. This development further highlights Guam’s growing strategic value in the Northern Pacific.

Moreover, the delegation will travel to Manila to connect with senior executives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aiming to enhance collaboration on Pacific programs after a successful Pacific Infrastructure Conference held in Brisbane. Discussions will center around future regional infrastructure engagements, including the upcoming Pacific Infrastructure Business Opportunities Seminar set for Nadi in May 2026.

Australia has established enduring economic and development partnerships throughout the Pacific region, particularly in Nauru and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, where Australian companies engage in sectors ranging from infrastructure to logistics. This mission aims not only to strengthen these existing relationships but also to identify new opportunities for commercial collaboration.

During this mission, the APIBC delegation plans to engage with government representatives, business leaders, and development partners to encourage dialogue on trade, investment, and infrastructure development, ultimately providing avenues for growth in the private sector across the Northern Pacific, and fostering a prosperous future for all involved.
