Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York addressed the Democratic National Convention on its opening night, commending Vice President Kamala Harris for her dedication to combating corporate greed.
Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the progressive “Squad” and a representative for parts of the Bronx and Queens, highlighted parallels between her working-class upbringing and that of Harris, emphasizing that Harris will prioritize support for the middle class.
The convention is being held from Monday to Thursday at the United Center in Chicago, which has hosted the event 11 times before, the last being in 1996 when President Bill Clinton was nominated for a second term.
Kamala Harris is set to give a speech on Thursday. The convention’s live updates will provide insights on scheduling and speakers throughout the event.
Ocasio-Cortez, often referred to as AOC, is recognized as a progressive member of the House of Representatives. During her speech, she expressed her unwavering support for Harris after initially backing President Joe Biden until he withdrew from the race.
In her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “In Kamala Harris, I see a leader who understands. I see a leader with a real commitment to working families.” She criticized Donald Trump, accusing him of prioritizing personal gain over the well-being of the country and its workers.
The convention can be watched live on its official website, airing from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern on the opening night, and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern on subsequent nights.
The DNC has also announced nightly themes for the convention, titled “For the People, For Our Future.”
