Steve Witkoff, the US Special Envoy to the Middle East, announced at a reception celebrating Israel’s Independence Day that significant developments concerning the expansion of the Abraham Accords are anticipated soon. Witkoff stated, “Very soon, we expect to hear many announcements related to the expansion of the Abraham Accords,” during the event held at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C.
His comments come just ahead of President Trump’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar next week. Witkoff also reinforced the US commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, noting progress in ongoing nuclear talks. “I hope we are moving in the right direction… The president has stated his desire to resolve this issue diplomatically if possible, and we are working toward an agreement,” he mentioned.
Touching upon the sensitive issue of hostages, he expressed optimism about negotiations involving Egypt and Qatar as mediators. Witkoff conveyed the emotional weight of the situation, noting that while the celebrations are joyous, they are also mixed with the reality of 59 hostages still held by Hamas.
Israel’s Ambassador to the US, Yechiel (Michael) Leiter, also expressed his views at the event, highlighting the miraculous nature of Israel’s existence as a sovereign state after two millennia. He stated, “We now have a historic opportunity to reshape the Middle East and bring greater stability and security to the entire world.”
