A chauffeur driving for Anthony Joshua has made a court appearance in Nigeria following a tragic car crash that resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s close associates. Adeniyi Kayode, age 46, is facing multiple charges, including death by dangerous driving. The incident occurred on December 29, when the vehicle transporting Joshua collided with a stationary lorry on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Unfortunately, Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene.
During Saturday’s hearing at Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State, Kayode appeared dressed in black but chose not to make any statements. The court has adjourned the case until February 25 to allow the prosecutor additional time to seek legal counsel. Kayode, who had been released on bail set at 5 million naira (around $3,500; £2,600), faces serious allegations that include reckless and negligent driving as well as driving without due care or a valid driver’s license.
Joshua, a celebrated former heavyweight boxing champion, was treated for his injuries following the crash but was released from the hospital just two days later. In a heartfelt tribute posted on social media, Joshua expressed his sorrow for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele, stating, “I didn’t even realize how special they are… I know it’s even tougher for their parents.” He was reportedly en route to visit family for New Year’s celebrations in Sagamu at the time of the accident, where he has familial connections.
This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on the roads, and the ongoing legal proceedings highlight the complexities involved in such tragic events. The community and those affected are grappling with the loss, while Joshua’s reflections underscore the deep bonds within his team.
