Answin Lata Goundar’s journey as a market vendor goes beyond mere financial gain; it has given her a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. Originally from Qalewaqa Labasa, she recounts her transition to Suva in 2012, driven by the hope of finding better employment and a brighter future.

Upon moving to Suva, Goundar settled in Caubati and took a job with a local Chinese vendor at the Suva Municipal Market. What began as a basic job turned into a passionate career. Reflecting on her early days, Goundar admits she was quite shy and faced challenges in serving customers. However, with 14 years of experience under her belt, she credits her previous employer’s mentorship for helping her build confidence and gain invaluable customer service skills.

“Even if customers had limited money, I learned how to communicate and assist them effectively,” she shared. Fueled by a desire for independence, Goundar dreamt of owning her own stall while working at the Suva market. When the Laqere market in Nasinu opened in 2020, she saw an opportunity and successfully applied to manage her own stalls.

Today, Goundar proudly owns four stalls at the Laqere market. She ensures the quality of her produce by sourcing fresh vegetables from Sigatoka and Baulevu, which arrive weekly. Her hard work is not solely to support her family; it also allows her to buy things she desires for herself—a pursuit that brings her joy.

Married to Kelvin Raj, a carpenter associated with the Hot Bread Kitchen, Goundar also juggles family life with their six-year-old son who attends Rishikul Primary School. Her story mirrors that of many female vendors in Fiji, showcasing a spirit of independence and resilience. Each day in the vibrant Laqere market, surrounded by lively exchanges and the scent of fresh produce, Goundar stands as a symbol of perseverance, creating opportunities and forging her own path while contributing to her family’s well-being.
