Anne Hathaway stars as a pop star and Michaela Coel portrays her estranged fashion designer in the eagerly awaited drama, “Mother Mary.” Directed by David Lowery, who has an impressive filmography including “The Green Knight,” “A Ghost Story,” and “Pete’s Dragon,” the film is set to release in April 2026, following its production which began in Germany in May 2023.
Described as a “psychosexual pop thriller,” “Mother Mary” delves into the complex relationship between the two leads as they come together to design a dress. In a recent Vogue interview, Hathaway characterized her character as a blend reminiscent of both Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, hinting at a multifaceted portrayal that aligns with the film’s themes.
The film’s original soundtrack is being crafted by a stellar lineup, including Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs, with Hathaway contributing her own vocals to the mix. Lowery, in a nod to its unique nature, described “Mother Mary” as a “weird, weird film” influenced by the iconic style of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” He has drawn comparisons between the film’s shooting atmosphere and that of “Apocalypse Now,” suggesting a creative and experimental production process.
Lowery is confident that the movie will evoke a wide array of strong emotions, stating, “It feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate.”
Both Hathaway and Coel have exciting projects lined up for the coming year. Hathaway is set to appear in a variety of films, including the comedy sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” action-adventure “Flowervale Street,” the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Verity,” and Christopher Nolan’s star-studded epic “The Odyssey.” Meanwhile, Coel, noted for her powerful performances in “I May Destroy You,” is also taking on a role alongside Ian McKellen in the comedy-drama “The Christophers,” which is scheduled for release next year.
Adding to the musical landscape, Charli XCX is composing for Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” due out in February, as well as portraying a version of herself in the satirical comedy “The Moment,” set for release in January. The year ahead appears promising for both actresses, showcasing their diverse talents across various genres.
