Anker Power Bank Recall: Is Your Device at Risk?

Anker has announced a recall of its PowerCore 10000 power bank, model A1263, due to a serious safety concern regarding the lithium-ion battery, which may pose a fire risk. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) has reported that Anker has received 19 incidents of fires and explosions associated with this power bank, leading to minor burn injuries and over $60,700 in property damage.

This recall impacts approximately 1,158,000 units sold online via platforms such as Amazon, Newegg, and eBay between June 2016 and December 2022. Consumers can identify affected units by the Anker logo on the side and the model number A1263 on the bottom edge. Notably, the recall only affects units sold in the United States that fall under specific serial numbers, which can be checked on Anker’s website.

To address the issue, Anker is offering affected users a choice between a $30 gift card that can be redeemed on their website or a free replacement model (A1388) that comes with improved features like a charge level display and a USB-C charging cable lanyard. To participate, consumers must submit a photo of their power bank with a specified date and the word “recall” written clearly, along with a photo showing the model and serial number. Although a purchase receipt is encouraged, it is not mandatory.

Once customers confirm their power bank is part of the recall, Anker advises them to take it to a facility equipped to safely dispose of lithium-ion batteries, emphasizing the risk of fire if disposed of improperly. This also serves as a timely reminder that portable power banks and batteries can develop significant issues over time, particularly as the technology ages. Users should remain vigilant for signs of overheating or swelling and consider proper disposal or an upgrade to solid-state batteries, which offer enhanced safety, efficiency, and longevity compared to traditional lithium-ion options.

As technology continually evolves, the advancements in battery designs highlight the importance of safety in everyday electronic devices. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed and proactive regarding their tech products to ensure their safety and well-being.
