The Los Angeles Angels are facing a pivotal decision regarding their center field position as they prepare for the upcoming season. General Manager Perry Minasian and his team are evaluating their options and potential strategies, as this position is less clear-cut compared to the glaring hole they have at third base.
Currently, the Angels have Jo Adell, who is expected to be a solid offensive contributor, alongside Bryce Teodosio, recognized for his elite fielding skills. However, the challenge lies in finding a player who excels in both areas, complicating their decision-making process. The Angels may have to choose between prioritizing offensive capabilities or defensive prowess in center field while also addressing their urgent need for third base and pitching improvements.
During the recent GM Meetings, Minasian pointed out the team’s existing potential in offensive and defensive players, raising the question of balance: “Do you want to score more runs and play offense? Do you want to prevent more runs and play defense? What are you giving up, vice versa?”
Free agency presents some attractive options, including Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, both capable at the plate and in the field. However, their salaries—Bellinger over $30 million and Grisham exceeding $20 million—might significantly impact the team’s budget. More budget-friendly alternatives, like Harrison Bader and Cedric Mullins, could enhance the team’s lineup but may not provide the same level of impact.
If the Angels decide to retain their current outfielders, a combination of Adell in center, Taylor Ward in left, and a rotation of Mike Trout and Jorge Soler in right field and designated hitter could be an arrangement they consider. Alternatively, they might trade one of their outfielders to bolster their lineup further.
Minasian remains cautious, emphasizing the need for depth and quality in the roster as neither Trout nor Soler’s health is guaranteed. He expressed confidence in Adell’s improvement after a challenging previous season, where he managed to hit 37 home runs despite defensive struggles. The Angels expect Adell to grow as a player moving forward, as Minasian stated, “Jo’s a worker,” and indicated that having Teodosio, who delivered exceptional defense albeit with limited offensive output, could be crucial.
Looking ahead, the organization is also eyeing 20-year-old Nelson Rada, who has shown potential in the minors and will have an opportunity to showcase his skills during spring training.
In addition to their center field dilemma, Minasian revealed his confidence in left-hander Reid Detmers as a starter, placing him directly into the rotation instead of leaving him to compete for a position in spring training. With a mixed track record, Detmers showed significant improvements last season, including a solid ERA out of the bullpen.
As the Angels continue to navigate these offseason challenges, their decisions will be crucial not only for the center field position but also in shaping a competitive team capable of contending in the coming season. The optimism surrounding the development of young talents, along with strategic acquisitions, could position the Angels favorably moving forward.
