Angels Announce 2026 Managerial Change as Ron Washington Exits

The Los Angeles Angels will have a new manager for the 2026 season after deciding not to exercise the option on Ron Washington’s contract. This decision marks another managerial change for the Angels, who have experienced a revolving door of leadership since Mike Scoscia’s 19-year tenure ended in 2018. In recent years, the team has seen Brad Ausmus, Joe Maddon, Phil Nevin, and now Ron Washington take on the managerial role, with Ray Montgomery stepping in as an interim manager for the latter part of the 2025 season.

Washington, who managed one-plus seasons before having to step down this past June due to health issues, had anticipated a full recovery from his quadruple bypass surgery by December and hoped to return to managing duties. However, the team’s decision indicates a shift in direction as they aim to end their prolonged postseason drought, which now stands at 11 years.

Ray Montgomery, who has a rich background in scouting and player development, could remain with the Angels organization possibly in a front office or player development role, depending on the future status of General Manager Perry Minasian. Minasian, who has one year remaining on his contract, has yet to have his future determined by the organization.

The Angels wrapped up a disappointing 72-90 season, just a year after recording a franchise-worst 63-99 record. The team’s performance underscores the challenge ahead for finding a manager who can steer the team to its first winning season since 2015.

Ron Washington, at 73, remains committed to an active coaching career, declaring his intention to continue in a hands-on role rather than an advisory position. His dedication to coaching is strongly evident as he looks forward to new opportunities in the baseball world.

Despite the turbulent season and the challenges looming over the team’s leadership decisions, fans remain hopeful that new managerial and operational strategies might rejuvenate the Angels’ fortunes on the field. Given their weeks-long delay, any forthcoming announcements regarding the new management or Perry Minasian’s status are eagerly anticipated, potentially setting the stage for a pivotal offseason for the club.
