Angels Adapt: Interim Manager Steps Up Amid Health Concerns

The Los Angeles Angels have confirmed that manager Ron Washington will remain on medical leave for the rest of the 2025 season. As a result, Ray Montgomery will continue in his role as interim manager, with infield coach Ryan Goins stepping up as the new bench coach.

Washington, who is 73 years old, stepped away from the team last week due to an unspecified health concern that is serious enough to prevent him from returning this season. He signed a two-year contract ahead of the 2024 season. Although the Angels finished last season with a disappointing 63-99 record, they are performing better this year, currently sitting at 40-40 and in contention for a playoff spot.

Montgomery, now acting as interim manager, has had experience stepping in when needed. He served as bench coach since 2022 and briefly managed in 2022 after Phil Nevin received a suspension. His familiarity with the team and coaching staff could prove beneficial as he guides the Angels through the remainder of the season.

Goins, who has transitioned from playing to coaching in a very short period, will now take on additional responsibilities as the Angels work through Washington’s absence. With adjustments being made in the coaching staff, the Angels remain focused on their potential playoff run as they strive to build on their current performance.

The situation serves as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability required in professional sports, especially in moments of uncertainty regarding health and leadership. The community is undoubtedly hopeful for Washington’s recovery and a successful outcome to the season under Montgomery’s leadership.
