Angel Reese’s inaugural season has officially concluded, as the Chicago Sky forward revealed on Saturday that she has sustained a season-ending injury. Reese injured her wrist during the Sky’s 92-78 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, a game where she excelled with another impressive double-double performance.
The Chicago Sky confirmed the seriousness of her injury, stating in an announcement that “Reese has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season due to a wrist injury.”
In a heartfelt social media message, Reese expressed mixed emotions, stating, “Through it all, I have shown that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. I’m filled with emotions right now about my season-ending injury, but also overwhelmed with gratitude for what lies ahead.”
Reese completed her first professional season with remarkable averages of 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. Earlier this month, she made history in the WNBA by surpassing Sylvia Fowles’ single-season rebound record, a significant achievement in her pursuit of the Rookie of the Year award, a closely contested battle against fellow star Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. In their last encounter of the season, the Fever defeated the Sky 100-81, with Clark scoring a career-high 31 points.
“Caitlin is an amazing player, and I’ve always thought highly of her. We’ve been competing against each other since high school. I think the rivalry really stirs up the fans,” Reese commented in her new podcast, “Unapologetically Angel.” “At the end of the day, it’s a game we both love, but there’s no animosity.”
As the WNBA regular season approaches its final two weeks, with seven of eight playoff positions already filled, the Sky are working hard to secure the last spot. Despite her injury, Reese shared on social media that fans and teammates can still expect her to be “the biggest cheerleader on the sideline!”
