Comedian Andy Richter, known for his long-standing collaboration with Conan O’Brien, initially hesitated to join the cast of Dancing With the Stars. During a recent appearance on the Sirius XM podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Richter admitted that when he first received the invitation to participate in the popular dance competition, his instinct was to decline.

Recalling the moment, Richter said, “In April, I got an email about doing it. My first reaction was to turn it down and don’t tell anyone.” His reluctance stemmed from not wanting to be pushed out of his comfort zone. However, Richter eventually reconsidered, viewing the opportunity as a chance to become more active. Preparing for the show helped motivate him to increase his fitness routine, despite his aversion to cardio exercises.

Richter also shared his apprehension leading up to meeting his professional dance partner, Emma Slater, stating he experienced “stress dreams” and felt anxious about the commitment. Furthermore, he disclosed that he had violated a non-disclosure agreement by informing his doctor about the offer due to medical issues, including a necessary hip replacement.

Despite the initial hesitation and health challenges, Richter seems to have embraced his role on Dancing With the Stars. He humorously remarked on the show’s premiere that his participation was motivated by the paycheck but acknowledged that the experience has been beneficial. In a conversation with The Wrap, he hinted at his dedication to the competition, suggesting he might be working harder than some of his younger competitors due to the commitment to rehearsals and practice.

Overall, Richter appears to have adjusted positively to his experience on the dance floor, framing it as a farewell to his “old arthritic hip” and a step toward personal growth and activity.
