Google has rolled out an update for the Android Package Installer, incorporating the new Material 3 Expressive design language to align with the overall look of the operating system. This redesign, part of the Android 16 QPR2 update, enhances usability by placing the app name and icon at the center of the installation dialog. The new layout also adopts distinct button styles, using filled buttons for primary actions like “Install” and “Open,” while employing elevated buttons for secondary actions such as “Cancel” and “Done.”
This improvement follows a significant overhaul of Android’s UI with the introduction of Material 3 Expressive design, which was implemented across multiple system interfaces, including the notification panel and lock screen. However, the Package Installer was one of the last components to receive this update, a move welcomed by users who sideload apps from outside of the Play Store. The updated dialog format emphasizes the current action taking place—whether it’s asking users if they want to install an app or confirming that installation is in progress—by highlighting the action in place of the app name.
In addition to the stylistic changes, the installation progress interface now features the Material 3 Linear Progress Indicator, and the font size for the dialog title has increased, giving the installation window a taller appearance. However, it is worth noting that the permission prompt for sideloading apps did not receive the same redesign and still uses the previous button style, which may just be a temporary oversight on Google’s part.
This update is significant as the sideloading UI interacts with the permissions model, recently revamped by Google. Since the Package Installer cannot be updated through Google Play System Updates, users must install the full Android 16 QPR2 update to experience these changes.
