Anaconda, a fresh take on a long-untapped franchise, is set to return to theaters with a unique twist on its predecessor rather than being a straightforward reboot or remake. The film, scheduled for release on December 25, 2025, features an ensemble cast that includes Selton Mello, Paul Rudd, and Jack Black. At the recent CCXP25 event in Brazil, Mello emphasized that this new iteration crafted by director Tom Gormican and his co-writer Kevin Etten diverges from the original 1997 film starring Jennifer Lopez.
Mello explained, “A lot of people are asking if it’s a reboot or a remake, and it’s not. It’s a very original creation. It’s meta, combining adventure, action, danger, and humor.” The storyline follows Rudd’s character, a background actor, and Black’s role as a wedding videographer who travel to Brazil to remake the original Anaconda film.
Director Gormican highlighted the importance of incorporating comedy into the narrative, despite the first film’s lack of humor. “Jack and Paul are incredibly funny yet can dial down their performances to convey real fear,” he noted. The film contrasts its comedic elements with genuine suspense during pivotal moments.
Interestingly, while Mello portrays a snake handler, he noted the absence of real snakes on set, revealing that all serpentine action was achieved through CGI, tapping into creativity and imagination. “I didn’t see a single snake during the whole thing,” he shared, highlighting the film’s reliance on visual effects instead of real snakes.
Gormican also discussed the film’s meta-narrative, stating that personal experiences from filming influenced plot decisions, including a significant last-minute change to the film’s ending due to lost locations, showing flexibility within the creative process.
Among the many scenes in the film, Mello expressed particular enthusiasm for a snake funeral scene, describing it as “crazy and funny and touching,” reflecting Gormican’s unique direction.
