Country music legend Vince Gill remains a steadfast source of support for his wife, Christian-pop icon Amy Grant, as they navigate a series of serious health challenges that began in 2020. In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE in November 2024, Gill opened up about their journey marked by uncertainty, recovery, and unwavering devotion.
The couple’s ordeal began when Grant was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart condition known as partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) while Gill was undergoing a routine health check. In mid-2020, Grant underwent open-heart surgery, a pivotal moment Gill recalls with a mix of relief and tenderness. Reflecting on seeing her in recovery, he shared, “It was just the most beautiful, peaceful thing on her face,” affirming his belief that she would be okay.
Unfortunately, their health struggles didn’t conclude there. In 2022, Grant suffered a serious bike accident that left her unconscious, requiring hospitalization due to a brain injury. In the face of these challenges, Grant has been vocal about the difficulties of her recovery, expressing fears about whether she would regain her full health. Gill’s unwavering support during this time has been invaluable. He canceled shows to be by her side and even wrote a special song for her as part of her healing process.
Gill introduced their daughter, Corrina, at a concert, where she sang a poignant rendition of Gill’s song, “When My Amy Prays.” Grant, in a January 2023 interview with PEOPLE, emphasized how Gill’s words comforted her during dark moments. “He said, ‘Things happen to people every day, and you just have to take one day at a time, and we’re here, and I love you,’” she recalled. Those affirmations have helped her navigate the ups and downs of her health journey.
Further complicating matters, Grant required throat surgery to remove a cyst, leading to a challenging period during which she struggled to relearn how to sing—a deeply personal setback for the artist whose voice is central to her identity and craft. Throughout these trials, Gill has openly praised Grant’s resilience, noting her ability to confront such challenges with “kindness and grace.”
Married for over 25 years, the couple, who tied the knot in 2000, continue to show their steadfast support for one another. They share one daughter, Corrina Grant Gill. Gill is also preparing to be honored with the 2025 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award on November 19, underscoring the legacy he continues to build both personally and professionally. Their journey showcases a powerful testament to love, resilience, and support through life’s adversities.
