American Samoa is poised to strengthen its international connectivity with a new undersea cable initiative, as announced by Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula. The territory will join the Pacific Connect initiative, which is a strategic partnership with technology powerhouse Google.
This initiative is designed to enhance American Samoa’s digital framework, ensuring resilience and integration into the global economy. A key component of this project is the Le Vasa cable—a state-of-the-art subsea fiber-optic system that will connect to the Bulikula cable, establishing pathways to other regions such as Fiji and French Polynesia.
The Le Vasa cable stands out due to its integration with the ongoing Bulikula project, which will result in cost efficiencies and accelerated installation processes. The name “Le Vasa,” which translates to “Ocean” or “Vast Sea,” carries significant cultural importance for the American Samoan community, reflecting both historical trade routes and contemporary connectivity that brings fresh information, innovation, and opportunities.
Once the Le Vasa cable is operational, it is expected to provide secure, high-speed internet access, significantly improving network resilience, particularly in the face of natural disasters and emergencies. Governor Pula highlighted the importance of this project, declaring it a historic step towards a more interconnected future for American Samoa.
“Our Administration is committed to economic advancement, and this project strengthens our strategic role in the Pacific while ensuring future generations benefit,” he remarked. The initiative is set to not only broaden digital access but also spur economic development within the territory, promising a bright future for American Samoa’s residents.
