AMD has reintroduced its popular entry-level processor, the Athlon 3000G, equipped with new packaging and an enhanced cooling system. Originally introduced in 2019 as a successor to the Athlon 200GE, the processor features two cores and four threads under AMD’s Zen architecture. It includes 4 MB of L3 cache, operates with a 35 W thermal design power (TDP), and offers clock speeds up to 3.5 GHz. An added advantage is its Vega 3 graphics with three compute units, making it suitable for light tasks, office applications, web browsing, and budget-friendly, compact PCs.
The updated version maintains the Dali core architecture, a budget-friendly iteration of the Raven Ridge design, manufactured at 14 nm. The significant update comes in the form of enhanced packaging and the integration of an upgraded Wraith cooler, which increases its appeal within the budget-conscious market segment. Priced at approximately $40, the Athlon 3000G remains one of the most cost-effective options within AMD’s AM4 lineup.
A crucial factor for prospective buyers is motherboard compatibility. While the processor utilizes the AM4 socket, not all contemporary motherboards support it. Specifically, newer motherboards based on B550 or A520 chipsets may face compatibility limitations, and it is entirely incompatible with the AM5 platform. Consequently, the processor is most suited for users who already have compatible hardware or aim to leverage affordable components from previous generations.
