Grey Henson, known for his role in the musical “Bigfoot!”, made a memorable appearance on national television Friday morning, showcasing his Sasquatch costume during a visit to TODAY. Accompanied by Amber Ruffin, the musical’s writer, Henson brought the character to life with full makeup and wig, promoting the show which is currently in previews at New York City Center.
Ruffin shared her creative vision for “Bigfoot!”, revealing that the musical aims to provide an origin story to the legendary creature. She described the plot as a satirical take on a crooked mayor who uses Bigfoot as a scapegoat to distract the townspeople while he embezzles their money. Interestingly, Ruffin noted that the storyline, which seemed far-fetched when it was first developed over ten years ago, has become increasingly relevant in today’s context.
“Bigfoot!” features lyrics by Amber Ruffin, who is a Tony and Emmy Award nominee. The book is co-written by Ruffin and Kevin Sciretta, with music composed by David Schmoll and direction and choreography by Danny Mefford. The musical commenced its off-Broadway performances on February 11, 2026, with the official opening night scheduled for March 1, 2026.
Set in the fictional town of Muddirt, the musical presents a unique blend of satire and whimsy. This glow-in-the-dark oasis, situated between a chemical dump site and a nuclear power plant, serves as the backdrop for a humorous exploration of corrupt politics, community fear, and the struggles of misunderstood youth — particularly when that youth happens to be an eight-foot-tall Bigfoot in dire need of electrolysis. The production promises to be a captivating blend of comedy and social commentary, making it a must-see for theatergoers.
