Authorities have successfully located two children following an Amber Alert that was issued early Monday morning in Tulare County, California. The siblings, aged 5 and 6, were returned safely after being handed over to law enforcement by two suspects involved in their abduction.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrests of 29-year-old Makenzie Morelli, the children’s biological mother who did not have legal custody, and 57-year-old David Steen. Later that evening, 28-year-old Kayla Williams was also apprehended in Fresno.
The alarming situation unfolded shortly after midnight when deputies responded to reports of a burglary and kidnapping at a residence in Earlimart. The children’s legal guardian, their biological aunt, alleged she was assaulted during the intrusion by four individuals.
Ashley Ritchie from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “Those are very serious offenses, burglary, abduction, kidnapping. A whole Amber Alert went out because of this.” The alert mobilized not only local residents but also citizens in neighboring counties, alerting them to the situation.
Ritchie explained that the suspects might have seen the Amber Alert on their own phones, which could have prompted them to return the children. “Without that Amber Alert coming out, I don’t know how it would’ve turned out,” she said.
The importance of the Amber Alert system was echoed by the California Highway Patrol, highlighting the thorough verification process behind issuing such alerts. Officer Adrian Gonzalez noted that these alerts are crucial for ensuring public safety.
Though the children are back home and safe, the incident was undeniably distressing for all involved. Ritchie expressed gratitude for the positive outcome but acknowledged the traumatic effects it may have had on the children: “All we want is the best for the children, and we’re so grateful that it turned out the way that it did and they were brought back safely.”
