While Amazon has attracted hundreds of millions of customers to its devices, many users utilize the Alexa-enabled Echo speakers for basic functions like setting alarms rather than making purchases.

Concerns have been raised by former Amazon employees about the company’s investment in these devices, with one noting, “We worried we’ve hired 10,000 people and we’ve built a smart timer.” In response to the earnings deficit, CEO Andy Jassy is exploring new strategies, including the introduction of a paid version of Alexa. However, some engineers fear this move may not yield the desired results.

An Amazon spokesperson emphasized the importance of the value derived from their services, stating that the company has established profitable ventures within its Devices & Services organization and is optimistic about the future. Despite this, reports indicate that Amazon’s latest AI-powered Alexa is not ready for launch, partly due to insufficient data and a lack of necessary hardware to support the advanced language models. The company has shifted its focus towards developing generative AI for its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services.

In defense, Amazon countered claims from former employees, arguing that they have access to adequate resources, including in-house chips and Nvidia GPUs. The company maintains its commitment to enhancing Alexa to become the premier personal assistant.
