One former senior employee expressed concern over the company’s direction, suggesting that the company’s massive hiring—more than 10,000 employees—has not translated into a profitable outcome, leading to a sentiment that they might have developed a “smart timer” rather than a successful retail integration.
In response to these setbacks, CEO Andy Jassy is exploring new avenues, including the introduction of a paid version of Alexa. However, there is skepticism among Amazons engineers about whether this shift will significantly change the current trajectory.
Despite these hurdles, an Amazon spokesperson noted the company’s commitment to creating value through its services, rather than just through device sales. They expressed confidence that Amazon’s Devices & Services division has already established profitable enterprises and is poised for future success.
On the technological front, Amazon’s plans for an AI-powered version of Alexa are reportedly not yet mature, as former employees have indicated the company still lacks sufficient data and necessary hardware to effectively deploy its more advanced capabilities. Notably, there are indications that Amazon is prioritizing generative AI development for its cloud services instead.
In their defense, Amazon dismissed criticisms from former employees, asserting that their current endeavors in AI are robust and that the team focused on developing an advanced iteration of Alexa has access to important resources, including specialized chips required for AI applications.
