Protests at an Amazon distribution center in Maspeth, Queens, escalated as the Teamsters union proceeded with a significant strike against the e-commerce giant, demanding better treatment for workers. As the strike reached its second day, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters declared that the movement is gaining momentum. They have mobilized thousands of workers across four states, arguing for enhanced benefits, fair wages, and job security.
Approximately 200 protesters gathered at the Queens location, which included Amazon drivers among the supporters. Notably, two individuals were arrested for disorderly conduct during the protests. Amazon driver Jogsyn Cardenas described a confrontational moment when he was forcibly removed from his vehicle while trying to demonstrate solidarity with the striking workers.
Cardenas raised concerns over pay discrepancies, emphasizing that other delivery workers, such as those from UPS, earn significantly more while Amazon generates higher revenue. Emmanuel Trinidad, another Amazon driver, expressed similar dissatisfaction, pointing out the inequities in pay despite performing the same job.
Antonio Rosario, an organizer with Teamsters Local 804 and one of those arrested, noted that the ongoing protests are a response to Amazon’s refusal to negotiate in good faith with workers seeking union representation. While Teamsters claimed to have established guidelines allowing for the controlled movement of trucks, Rosario argued that he was unfairly detained.
In response, Amazon stated that the protests have not significantly affected its operations and attributed the attendance to outside organizers rather than its workforce. Kelly Nantel, Amazon’s director of Global Corporate Issues and Media Relations, highlighted that the majority of their employees continued to work.
The situation underscores a growing tension between the company and labor movements, evidenced by numerous unfair labor practice charges filed against Amazon across several states. Mayor Eric Adams encouraged both sides to reach a fair agreement, aiming to prevent unnecessary divisions.
In this climate of labor unrest, the strikes reflect a broader movement for workers’ rights, showing that collective action can mobilize significant change. As the Teamsters union pushes for their cause, there’s a hopeful potential that these discussions could lead to a more equitable working environment for all employees involved.
