Workers at seven Amazon facilities have initiated a strike in a concerted effort to push for a labor agreement, as articulated by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The strike began early Thursday, coinciding with a peak shopping season, and early indications show picketing occurring in various locations, notably in Queens, New York City.
The Teamsters have expressed their dissatisfaction, claiming that Amazon disregarded a December 15 deadline for contract negotiations, prompting workers—representing almost 10,000 team members across 10 facilities—to take action. Despite the strike’s scale, Amazon has stated they anticipate minimal disruption across their operations, which the Teamsters consider the largest strike against the company in U.S. history.
The union represents a fraction of Amazon’s massive workforce of 1.5 million employees but continues to expand its influence. Among those taking part in this strike effort are employees from a Staten Island warehouse, where a successful union favor occurred in 2022, alongside other facilities where majority support for unionization has manifested.
Strikes are reported in locations including San Francisco and multiple delivery stations across Southern California, New York City, Atlanta, and Skokie, Illinois. While organized labor at one facility is not yet unionized, solidarity actions are being observed across the nation, showcasing a united front among union workers.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien emphasized the importance of respect for workers, stating, “Amazon is pushing its workers closer to the picket line by failing to show them the respect they have earned.” O’Brien suggested that delays in package deliveries could be attributed to Amazon’s unwillingness to negotiate fairly.
In response, Amazon has contested the union’s claims, stating that many drivers work as independent contractors for third-party Delivery Service Partners, not as Amazon employees. The company has leveled accusations against the Teamsters, claiming they have used intimidation tactics towards their workforce.
