Alonso’s Back Injury Forces Practice Change: What’s Next for Aston Martin?

Fernando Alonso will not be taking part in the first practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix due to a back injury, according to an announcement from Aston Martin. The team has appointed Felipe Drugovich, their reserve driver, to step in for Alonso during this session.

Aston Martin stated that Alonso has been dealing with a muscular back injury since the Belgian Grand Prix and opted to sit out the opening practice to focus on his treatment. “As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1,” the team’s statement read. “A decision will then be made on Fernando’s participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course.”

This marks the second instance this season where Drugovich has replaced Alonso during a first practice, having previously done so in Bahrain. However, this appearance will not count toward Aston Martin’s requirements for utilizing inexperienced drivers, as the team was unable to notify the FIA of the substitution in advance as regulations require.

If Alonso’s recovery takes longer than anticipated, Aston Martin may need to consider further substitutions for the following practice sessions, although regulations stipulate that no driver changes can be made once qualifying has begun.

As we look forward to the event, fans hope for a swift recovery for Alonso so he can return to the track and showcase his talent once again. It underscores the importance of driver health and the team’s commitment to ensuring they compete at their best.
