Brazil’s Presidential Ethics Committee has announced an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Human Rights Minister Silvio Almeida. Additionally, Federal Police Chief Andrei Rodrigues has expressed his commitment to probe the matter further.

The organization Me Too Brazil, which supports victims of sexual violence, stated that it has been approached by women who reported instances of sexual harassment involving Mr. Almeida. A report by Metrópoles indicated that 14 individuals familiar with the allegations were interviewed.

Anielle Franco, the racial equality minister, is the only alleged victim identified so far, although she has not publicly addressed the claims.

In an official statement, the federal government acknowledged the gravity of the allegations, emphasizing that the situation is being handled with the seriousness and urgency warranted by potential violence against women.

First Lady Rosângela da Silva recently shared a photo with Ms. Franco on Instagram, leading many to speculate about Mr. Almeida’s position in the government. This speculation intensified after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva remarked that it is unacceptable for someone accused of sexual misconduct to remain in office.

Mr. Almeida is expected to meet with President Lula today to discuss his future.

The Ministry of Women’s Rights expressed support for the ongoing investigations into Mr. Almeida’s conduct.

In a statement, Mr. Almeida “vehemently denied” all allegations, asserting that there is a concerted effort to undermine his contributions and the broader agenda for human rights in Brazil. He plans to seek legal action against Me Too Brazil for clarification on the allegations made against him, asserting that all claims should be thoroughly investigated and based on solid evidence.

The Human Rights Ministry operates with one of the smallest budgets in the government. Since taking office, Mr. Almeida has faced criticism for not adequately funding initiatives aimed at protecting marginalized youth and advocating for LGBTQ rights. However, his department did achieve a recent success with the reestablishment of a commission on political disappearances.
