Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game rosters saw significant adjustments on Friday as several marquee players opted out, paving the way for fresh faces.
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler, a three-time All-Star, has chosen to skip the event to focus on rest and prepare for the upcoming second half of the season. In his place, San Diego Padres reliever Adrian Morejon has been added to the National League roster. Morejon boasts an impressive 1.71 ERA over 45 appearances and has two saves to his name. Notably, the Padres have made history as the first team to feature three relievers in the All-Star Game.
Meanwhile, Detroit Tigers’ Casey Mize steps in for Boston Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet in the American League roster. Mize, who holds a remarkable 9-2 record and a 2.63 ERA, is part of a Tigers team that currently has the best record in baseball. He is scheduled to pitch against the Seattle Mariners soon.
In a similar vein, New York Yankees’ Carlos Rodón will replace teammate Max Fried on the AL roster. Rodón returns as an All-Star for the third time, having previously been selected in 2021 and 2022. Fried, a three-time All-Star with the Braves, will have the opportunity to face his former team when the Yankees meet Atlanta shortly after the break.
Adding to the changes, Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena has been tapped to take over for Julio Rodríguez, who is resting and gearing up for the remainder of the season. Arozarena’s performance has surged in recent weeks, showcasing 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases thus far.
Additionally, Yusei Kikuchi of the Los Angeles Angels will not take part in the festivities, with Drew Rasmussen from the Tampa Bay Rays stepping into his slot due to an impressive 2.82 ERA.
Finally, the Kansas City Royals also secured two All-Star slots, with Maikel Garcia replacing Tampa Bay’s Brandon Lowe and Carlos Estévez stepping in for Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom.
These roster changes not only highlight the depth and talent within Major League Baseball but also offer new players a chance to shine on a prominent stage, making this year’s All-Star Game not just a showcase of stars but a thrilling opportunity for emerging talent.
