Alison Sweeney is taking the lead in two upcoming Hallmark films, demonstrating her versatility both in front of and behind the camera. Her first project, “Romance at Hope Ranch,” holds a special significance as it not only features Sweeney’s 17-year-old daughter, Megan, in a pivotal role but also incorporates their shared passion for horseback riding.

Having spent two years developing the concept, Sweeney revealed that the idea for a horse-themed movie was sparked by a personal longing to star in one, given her history of appreciating equestrian films on Hallmark. “Every time a great horse-themed movie comes out on Hallmark, I’m always like, ‘Why isn’t that me?’” she confessed. In collaboration with Gabriel Hogan, her co-star from the “Hannah Swensen Mysteries,” she was able to flesh out the script and fulfill her dream of bringing “Hope Ranch” to life—an endeavor inspired by her family’s history, with characters named after her mother and grandmother.

Sweeney’s decision to cast her daughter came during a discussion with her producer, Craig Baumgarten, who suggested Megan for the role. Initially surprised, Sweeney embraced the idea, stating, “Yes, of course, that would be amazing.” Although Megan is not currently pursuing acting, she approached the role with seriousness, preparing thoroughly for her first on-camera experience.

While maintaining professionalism on set, Sweeney established clear boundaries with Megan, reminding her they were taking on different roles in their working relationship. The result was a rewarding experience, allowing Sweeney to witness her daughter’s growth while capturing precious behind-the-scenes moments.

Beyond the family connection, the film also allowed Sweeney to showcase her love for horses; she recently honed her equestrian skills during a guest appearance on another Hallmark show. “It was a perfect warm-up for me to do this movie,” she recalled.

Following “Romance at Hope Ranch,” Sweeney will return to the beloved “Hannah Swensen Mysteries” with “Sugar & Vice,” premiering on March 7. Set during a masquerade ball plagued by a murder mystery, the film promises to deliver an engaging twist reminiscent of Agatha Christie stories. Sweeney noted the importance of wardrobe in establishing the right tone, underlining the careful planning that went into the film, particularly as the team aimed to avoid a Halloween-esque vibe.

With “Sugar & Vice,” Sweeney continues her creative journey in this franchise, where she takes on multiple roles: writer, star, and executive producer. “I always look for new ideas to keep things fresh and to challenge the characters,” she shared, emphasizing her drive to maintain audience engagement.

Reflecting on her writing process, Sweeney draws inspiration from seasoned actors, embracing moments where their suggestions enhance her scripts. “I love it when an actor makes it better,” she said, highlighting the collaborative spirit of storytelling.

As she navigates the world of murder mysteries, Sweeney playfully acknowledged the peculiarities of her research process, joking about the questionable nature of her Google search history.

Mark your calendars for the premieres: “Romance at Hope Ranch” will air on February 28 at 8/7c, followed by “Sugar & Vice” on March 7 at the same time, both on the Hallmark Channel. Sweeney’s projects not only celebrate her talents but also serve to strengthen family ties and showcase shared passions, promising a delightful viewing experience for audiences.
