Alicia Silverstone, known for her role in “Clueless,” surprised fans with a TikTok video showing her taste-testing an unfamiliar fruit she found while walking the streets of England. On August 20, Silverstone held up a small orange fruit resembling a cherry tomato and sought help from her followers in identifying it.
In the video, the 47-year-old actress explained that she came across the fruit and, after biting into it, was unsure whether it was a tomato. She accidentally dropped the fruit on the ground and continued to express her confusion, pointing out that its leaves did not match those of a tomato.
Silverstone asked her followers, “So, what the heck is this?” and revealed the fruit’s appearance, which raised concerns among her audience. Many users quickly flooded the comments with reactions, cautioning her against eating unknown plants. Comments ranged from warnings about consuming random berries to humor over the idea of seeing Silverstone in their gardens.
After some investigation, TikTok users identified the fruit as a Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum), which is known to be toxic. The Jerusalem cherry belongs to the same family as black nightshade and features small, round, colorful fruits. The National Library of Medicine indicates that consuming this plant can lead to various gastrointestinal issues and can even affect the central nervous system.
To reassure her fans, Silverstone later posted a follow-up message confirming that she was safe: “Alive and well! Don’t worry… I didn’t swallow.” Many of her followers expressed relief in the comments, glad to hear she was alright, with some even joking about her newfound adventurous spirit when it comes to trying unidentified foods.
