Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) announced tonight that all schools will be closed tomorrow (Monday) due to the ongoing winter weather. Initially, there had been plans to open schools with a two-hour delay, but the forecasted snowfall prompted a change in plans. Students will engage in synchronous learning from home, while staff will follow a virtual workday.

Parents and students can expect live instruction via Zoom paired with independent work assignments. Teachers are also set to provide virtual office hours to assist their students. It is important for families to check their student’s Canvas or Clever accounts by 8 a.m. for specific details about the schedule. Attendance will be recorded through these platforms. Essential staff members are still expected to report to work if conditions allow for safe travel.

The decision to close schools comes amid a Winter Weather Advisory for the D.C. area, which is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service predicts that the region could see 3 to 5 inches of snow overnight, with continuing snowfall possible until early afternoon. Wind gusts could reach up to 37 mph, contributing to hazardous conditions.

Meanwhile, the City of Alexandria intends to maintain normal services such as refuse, recycling, yard waste, and curbside food collection for Monday. City crews are actively working in 12-hour shifts to ensure roads are treated and cleared, with continuous operations until conditions improve. Residents are encouraged to monitor road conditions by calling 511.

As a reminder, the city’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road is operating as usual from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly, ensuring that those in need have a warm place to stay during the cold weather.
