Alex Morgan, a celebrated figure in U.S. Women’s National Team history and a prominent face in women’s soccer, has officially announced her retirement from professional soccer. The announcement coincides with her pregnancy announcement for her second child. Morgan is set to play her final match on Sunday, September 8, as the San Diego Wave takes on the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.
Reflecting on her journey with the team, Morgan, who began her USWNT career in 2009 at age 20, expressed gratitude for the relationships and groundbreaking achievements in women’s sports. “I grew up on this team; it was so much more than soccer. I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT,” she stated.
At 35, Morgan wraps up a remarkable 15-year career, having scored an impressive 123 goals for the national team, ranking her fifth all-time in U.S. history, along with 53 assists. Morgan’s career win-loss record with the team stands at an astounding 177 wins, 15 losses, and 32 draws. Notably, the team never lost a match in which Morgan scored, achieving a record of 76 wins and 10 draws.
Throughout her career, Morgan stepped onto the field for the national team 224 times, making 158 starts and acting as captain on 23 occasions. With 176 total goals and assists, she sits behind legends Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Kristine Lilly, and Carli Lloyd.
Her first goal for the national team came in 2010, and she went on to score against 32 different nations, with her most prolific opponent being Japan, against whom she netted 12 goals. Morgan’s final appearance for the U.S. team was on June 4, 2024, and her last goal was in a Concacaf match against Argentina in February 2024.
Morgan’s impact on women’s soccer has been significant, both on and off the pitch. She was a key player in securing two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles and is renowned for her performances during the 2012 Olympics, including a dramatic last-minute goal against Canada that clinched a spot in the final.
