On January 23, renowned climber Alex Honnold will embark on an exhilarating challenge as he attempts to free solo climb Taipei 101, the iconic skyscraper that stands at 1,667 feet and features 101 floors of glass, steel, and concrete. This live event, titled Skyscraper Live, will be broadcast on Netflix, offering viewers a unique two-hour global experience.

Known for his impressive ascents of challenging rock faces, Honnold now faces the distinct challenges posed by urban climbing. Skyscrapers like Taipei 101 present different psychological and physical hurdles compared to natural rock formations. Honnold remarked on the uniqueness of this challenge, noting, “Buildings are steeper than most rock faces… It’s just a difference, and it’s exciting.”

In an interview, Honnold shared insights into his decision to tackle Taipei 101. “It’s amazing and it’s an incredible building. It’s possible, which a lot of skyscrapers aren’t,” he expressed, emphasizing the rarity of such an opportunity. He also highlighted the need for permission to climb these structures, a pivotal factor in his decision-making process.

As he prepares for the climb, Honnold is mindful of the repetitive movements involved in urban climbing, stating that while the mindset remains same—focusing on not falling—buildings demand a different physical approach. He anticipates the psychological aspect to be a significant unknown during the climb, as this will be his first experience scaling a skyscraper. Addressing the live audience factor, he commented, “My life is on the line — I don’t really care who’s watching.”

Prepping for this colossal ascent has encompassed a rigorous training routine over the past two and a half months, drawing on Honnold’s three-decade-long journey in climbing. He has focused on strengthening his full-body fitness, acknowledging that climbing a building resembles a whole-body workout more than traditional rock climbing does.

One of the most technically challenging sections will be the “bamboo boxes,” a series of eight overhanging segments that Honnold expects to test his abilities significantly. He is passionate about approaching the climb thoughtfully, aiming for a graceful ascent rather than just completing the climb. In previous climbs, he has experienced various outcomes, and he hopes this climb will be a blend of enjoyment and triumph.

As a devoted husband and father, Honnold notes that while life has changed with family responsibilities, his approach to climbing remains dedicated and methodical. He looks forward to celebrating with loved ones after what he hopes will be a successful climb of Taipei 101.
Skyscraper Live is produced by Plimsoll Productions and aims to showcase not just the thrill of climbing but also the beauty and artistry in the act itself. Honnold hopes that viewers will share in the joy of his experience, appreciating the preparation and effort behind the ascent.

This remarkable endeavor represents not just a thrilling athletic challenge but also a moment of connection between Honnold and viewers around the globe, reflecting the spirit of adventure and the pursuit of excellence.
