Alcaraz Overcomes Early Struggles to Advance in US Open Thriller

Carlos Alcaraz faced a challenging start in his opening match at the US Open on Tuesday night, needing four sets to secure his place in the second round against Australian Li Tu. The Spaniard, aiming for his third consecutive major title and fifth overall, ultimately triumphed with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. This victory marks Alcaraz’s 60th match win at a Grand Slam and extends his winning streak in major tournaments to 15.

Alcaraz expressed his satisfaction after the match, stating, “First of all, I’m really happy to get through and [have] a chance to be better in the next round. Obviously, I felt well on court. I think I hit the ball well. I moved well.” He acknowledged Tu’s performance, noting the Australian’s surprising improvement, especially in the second set.

In the early stages of the match, Alcaraz, dressed in an all-black outfit, quickly won the first set and took a break lead. However, Tu settled into the game after a shaky start, pressuring Alcaraz’s second serve and taking advantage of some uncharacteristic errors from the Spaniard. The second set was particularly challenging for Alcaraz, who recorded 18 unforced errors compared to just two in the first set. Despite the hiccup, he regained focus, adjusted his strategy, and dominated the match afterward.

Throughout the two-hour and 42-minute contest, Alcaraz created 19 break points, successfully converting seven. He showcased his powerful play with 50 winners and maintained an 80 percent success rate on his first serves. In his next match, he will face Botic van de Zandschulp, who defeated Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.

Tu, playing in only his second major tournament, displayed remarkable shot-making and agility, endearing himself to the crowd with his spirited play and cheerful demeanor. The audience rallied behind him with chants, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for the qualifier.
