TURIN, Italy — Carlos Alcaraz has successfully concluded the 2025 season as the world No. 1 in men’s tennis, requiring less than 90 minutes in his latest match to secure his position. To clinch the top ranking, Alcaraz needed to win once more at the ATP Finals, and he achieved this with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. By doing so, he swept his group at this prestigious season-ending event featuring the top eight players.
Expressing his pride and joy after the match, Alcaraz stated, “It means the world to me, to be honest. The year No. 1 is always a goal. At the beginning of the year, I thought it was really far away, with Jannik [Sinner] winning almost every tournament he plays. But from the middle of the season till now, I set my sights on the No. 1 ranking, and finally, I got it. The work we put in every day throughout the season, with its ups and downs, makes me really proud of my team and myself.”
This achievement marks the second time in four years that the 22-year-old Spaniard has ended the year atop the ATP rankings. Alcaraz previously made history in 2022, becoming the youngest player to finish a year as the No. 1 ranked player at just 19 years old.
To secure his place at the pinnacle again, Alcaraz had to win three matches at the ATP Finals while Jannik Sinner needed to go undefeated to have a chance to defend his title. Despite feeling some nerves at the start of his match against Musetti, Alcaraz dominated the match and overcame a challenging atmosphere, ultimately advancing on his third match point.
With this win, Alcaraz will now face the winner of the upcoming semifinal match between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime on Saturday.
In related news, Alex de Minaur also made headlines with his first ATP Finals victory, defeating Taylor Fritz 7-6 (3), 6-3. This victory marked a significant milestone for De Minaur, who had yet to win at the tournament prior to this match. “I finally won here in Torino,” he proclaimed, and with this triumph, he advanced to face Sinner in the semifinals.
The ATP Finals continue to showcase the rising talent and competitiveness in men’s tennis, promising an exciting conclusion to the season.
