A’ja Wilson Makes WNBA History with Unprecedented Scoring Record

In a remarkable achievement, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces shattered the WNBA single-season scoring record during her team’s 86-75 victory over the Indiana Fever. Wilson scored 27 points, bringing her season total to 956 points, surpassing the previous record of 939 set by Jewell Loyd of the Seattle Storm just last season.

Wilson made history by tying the record with a free throw in the first quarter and then breaking it with a mid-range jumper just before halftime. If she maintains her performance in the Aces’ remaining four regular season games, she could become the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a single season, needing to average only 11 points per game. Currently, she leads the WNBA in scoring with an impressive average of 27.3 points per game.

Postgame, the two-time MVP expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the significance of this milestone amid the league’s talent. “It’s a blessing, it really is,” Wilson said. “We have some phenomenal players in this league, so for my name to be on that list, it’s truly a blessing. I have to credit my teammates because without them, I wouldn’t get the basketball.”

The support Wilson received from her teammates and peers was evident. Notably, Dawn Staley, a six-time WNBA All-Star and head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, shared her congratulations. Staley, who coached Wilson during her college years, highlighted the importance of the achievement in a heartfelt message.

Alysha Clark, a forward for the Aces, also acknowledged Wilson’s leadership and talent, stating, “The crown is heavy, but she shows up every day and pours into those around her.” Clark praised Wilson’s consistency in leading the team and acknowledged the challenges of being both a superstar and a leader.

In addition to her scoring, Wilson recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks. She is now just 29 boards shy of the single-season record set by Angel Reese earlier this year. Meanwhile, her teammates contributed significantly, with Clark scoring 14 points, and Tiffany Hayes and Chelsea Gray adding 12 and 11, respectively.

The Aces improved their record to 23-13, positioning themselves for a shot at winning their third consecutive championship—the second team in WNBA history to achieve such a feat. In contrast, the Fever faced disappointment, with Kelsey Mitchell leading their scoring with 24 points, and rookie star Caitlin Clark managing only 16 points after struggling with her shooting.

Despite the loss, the Fever remain in playoff contention, having secured a berth for the first time since 2016 by winning seven of their last ten games. They will have an opportunity to face the Aces again in a rematch on Friday.
