AJ Dybantsa: The Next Big Thing in College Basketball?

The future of AJ Dybantsa’s basketball career looks promising as the senior swingman from Brockton, currently attending Utah Prep, has emerged as the top-ranked player in the 2025 high school basketball recruiting class. In an announcement made on ESPN’s First Take, Dybantsa has committed to joining BYU Basketball.

Dybantsa’s journey has seen him transfer to Utah Prep this summer after spending a season at Prolific Prep in Napa, California, and two years at St. Sebastian’s, a private school in Needham, Massachusetts. His impressive height of 6 feet 9 inches and weight of 200 pounds make him a formidable player on the court.

Born in Boston, Dybantsa was raised in Brockton, where he took his early steps in basketball at Jubilee Christian Church in Stoughton. His family background plays a significant role in his athletic journey—he is the son of Ace and Chelsea Dybantsa and has a younger sister, Jasmyn, who is making waves as a volleyball player at Cardinal Spellman High.

During his high school career, Dybantsa’s accomplishments are noteworthy. As a freshman at St. Sebastian’s, he garnered the 2022-23 Gatorade Player of the Year title in Massachusetts, averaging 19 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game. His exceptional shooting percentage of 60.8% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc earned him a spot on the Independent School League First Team All-Conference and recognition as the top freshman in the country by ESPN.

After transferring to Prolific Prep in 2023 under the guidance of Milton native coach Ryan Bernardi, and subsequently reclassifying to the Class of 2025, Dybantsa now gears up for his senior season at Utah Prep. His talent has also shone on the international stage, where he contributed significantly to Team USA’s U17 FIBA World Cup team, helping secure the seventh consecutive gold medal for the program in Turkey by delivering an impressive 14 points, alongside 4 rebounds and 3 assists during a championship game.

In terms of recruitment, Dybantsa has received interest from nearly every Division 1 college basketball program across the country, narrowing down an initial list of over 20 offers to four finalists: Alabama, BYU, Kansas, and North Carolina.

This journey reflects not just his individual talent but also underscores his hard work and dedication, suggesting that with a strong collegiate career at BYU, AJ Dybantsa could be on the path to a successful professional basketball future.
