This initiative could lead to a major breakthrough in U.S. energy security, as it represents the first deployment of a commercial microreactor by the Department of Defense. The project builds on significant legislative and executive initiatives, such as the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act and Executive Orders promoting small modular reactors for national defense. Microreactors are compact nuclear energy systems capable of generating 1-50 megawatts of continuous electricity, operating independently from the commercial grid. Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Energy, Installations, and Environment Michael Saunders expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Oklo, highlighting their innovative approach and commitment to safety. The notice also signals the beginning of negotiations for a potential 30-year, firm-fixed-price contract with Oklo, contingent on obtaining an NRC license.
